11th Baltic Triennial

Witte de With director Defne Ayas to curate 11th Baltic Triennial with Benjamin Cook, Ieva Miseviciute and Michael Portnoy.

The 11th edition of the Baltic Triennial of International Art is taking turn towards a more condensed format of a 12 day event focused exclusively on film and performance. The 2012 edition will be curated by Defne Ayas, Director of Witte de With, Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam; and Benjamin Cook, Director of LUX, London. By invitation of Defne Ayas the curatorial concept is developed together with New York-based artists Ieva Miseviciute and Michael Portnoy. Countering the general tendency of biennials to be pluralist, all-encompassing multi-platforms, the curators choose to channel the contributions of artists through a radically minimized vessel — one human being. The Triennial is entitled after its medium who in his own right carries one of the most common Lithuanian names, Mindaugas.

Brief History of the Event
The exhibition was founded as The Baltic Triennial of Young Contemporary Art in The Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1979. During the Soviet period and until the end of the eighties it was guided by an attempt to show emerging and non-conformist art; after the restoration of independent Lithuania in 1990, it was continued as one of the central events of the Contemporary Art Centre (CAC) in Vilnius, directed by Kestutis Kuizinas, and was becoming increasingly more international. The latest editions were curated by Tobias Berger (Centre of Attraction, 2002); Sofia Hernandez Chong Cuy, Raimundas Malasauskas and Alexis Vaillant (BMW, 2005); and Ann Demeester and Kestutis Kuizinas (Urban Stories, 2009).

Visiting Frieze New York on Randall’s Island is like being sucked into a black hole. You get on a ferry (or a bus, or a bike, or a taxi), enter a giant, spacious tent, and then time stops. Or it disappears. Or it slips away. Next thing you know, you stumble out dehydrated and drunk off your speakeasy cocktail (more on that tomorrow) and notice the sun starting to sink in the sky. DR - 11.05.13
