Philip-Lorca diCorcia (1951, Hartford, Connecticut, USA), lives and works in New York
The works of American photographer Philip-Lorca diCorcia alternate between informal snap shots and meticulously staged compositions with a baroque theatricality. Documentary work is mixed with the fictional worlds of cinema and advertising, stimulating a powerfull cross breeding between reality, fantasy and desire. Since his participation in the landmark New York Moma-exhibition ‘Pleasures and Terrors of Domestic Comfort’ in 1997, the artist exhibited worldwide. Recent institutional solo exhibitions took place at Manezh Hall (Moscow, 2009), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2008), ICA (Boston, 2007), Foam (Amsterdam, 2006), Fondazione Bevilacqua la Masa (Venice, 2005), Whitechapel Art Gallery (London, 2003), Museum Folkwang (Essen, 2003) and Magasin 3 (Stockholm, 2003). DiCorcia participated in Whitney Biennial (1997), Carnegie International (2003) and Gwangju Biennial (2010). Nathaniel Mellors (1974, Doncaster, UK), lives and works in Amsterdam and London
British artist Nathaniel Mellors has earned a reputation with impressive exhibitions in which electronic animated sculptures are combined with absurdist films, objects and photo works. Recurrent theme is the alternating current between our inclination to project concepts and values onto objects and the digital culture in which the image invariably prevails over whatever it represents. Combining technology, theatre and television formats, Mellors’ eccentric universe reflects a fascination for the uncultivated. Mellors had solo shows at Cobra Museum (Amstelveen 2010-2011), De Hallen (Haarlem, 2010), SMBA (Amsterdam, 2009), Monterhermoso (Vitoria, 2009), South London Gallery (2009) and Lombard-Freid Projects (New York, 2009). He participated in the Venice Biennial 2011 and the Tate Triennial 2009. The artist is represented by Galerie Diane Stigter (Amsterdam), Monitor (Rome) and Matts Gallery (London).
Norbert Schwontkowksi (1949, Bremen), lives and works in Berlin and Bremen
The pictorial worlds of Norbert Schwontkowski represent an infinite private universe infected by melancholic feelings of isolation, hostility, desire and restlessness. Anonymous characters find themselves in situations which evoke a dark sense of humour and anarchy. The artists produces his own paints, using ingredients such as copper sulfate, iron chloride and tea, resulting in tertiary colours and gritty textures. Schwontkowski had major solo shows in Münchner Stadtmuseum (2009), KW (Berlin, 2008), Kabinet für Aktuelle Kunst (Bremerhaven, 2007) and participated in the Berlin Biennial 4 (2006). The artist is represented by Contemporary Fine Arts (Berlin), Grimm (Amsterdam), Kerlin Gallery (Dublin), David Risley Gallery (Copenhagen) and Raucci/Santamaria (Napoli).
