In memoriam Ferdinand Dorsman

07/12/2011

Message from New York,

With intense sadness we would like to share with you that our colleague and friend, Ferdinand Dorsman, General Director for Cultural Affairs USA at the Netherlands Consulate General, suddenly passed away on Sunday, December 4, during the flight Amsterdam-New York.

Ferdinand worked with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1986. He started his career as a policy officer in Mexico. He held several positions in the Ministry and was posted to Colombo and Berlin. He was the Head of Press and Cultural Affairs in Berlin before he started his position at the Consulate General in New York.

Ferdinand was a beloved and dedicated colleague who was extremely knowledgeable. He deeply loved the arts and completely dedicated himself to fostering international cultural cooperation with the Netherlands during the last decade of his working life. With his open and engaging working style he has inspired and connected with many in and outside of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His contribution to the arts and culture inside and outside of the Netherlands was invaluable.

We will miss him dearly.

Our thoughts are with his immediate family, Giulio, Ingrid, Max and Arend.

On Friday night Swiss police fired rubber bullets and teargas at an artist-activist group who took over Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata and architect Christophe Scheidegger's politically uncomfortable 'favela cafe' at Art Basel, a fully working eatery in the guise of Brasil's ad-hoc urban areas. Art Basel had allowed the group to protest for a limited time. (video) DR - 17.06.13
