Dear Editors,
I hope this is not already arriving too late. But in the meantime I have been thinking about your last email, which wondered ‘Is it WE or is it ME?’ It occurrs to me that this distinction between the collective and individual may be false — of course, collective will inevitably depends on individual agency. It is always only a matter of choosing to share.
In thinking about what I could possibly write on the subject for this issue, I realized that it might be a good idea to republish a piece that I wrote seven years ago. ONE POSSIBLE SCENARIO FOR A COLLECTIVE FUTURE originally appeared in DOT DOT DOT 5, April 2001.
Now, I am struck by how the passage of time has completed this assignment for me already. This article was written at the height of the Dot-Com collapse — reading it again today, there is quite a different effect. Again an economic bubble has burst, but this time the consequences appear considerably more dire. Excessive speculation in the housing market has led to a collapse in all aspects of the economy. It is significantly unclear what might happen next.
So, I have just finished wrestling with the old DOT DOT DOT layout files (they were made in Quark xPress (was this only seven years ago?)) and I have managed to reassemble the text as a reformatted PDF.
I hope that ‘sharing’ my previously written article again, seven years later, as time has conspired to make some of the ideas again relevant may be a gesture that fits in with the concept of this issue.
For now,
David Reinfurt
