De beroemde deur van de galerie

After 40 years Fons Welters says goodbye to the gallery world. As of September 2025 Galerie Fons Welters will close its doors.

Starting small in 1985 in a space in Amsterdam’s Palmdwarsstraat Galerie Fons Welters quickly grew into its now well known space at the Bloemstraat 140, Amsterdam. There Welters chose to present artists working in sculpture and installation for its first years. Slowly other media were shown, always with an eye for experimental approaches. Giving young talent a stage has always been and still is an important pillar in the gallery’s programming, although some of the represented artists have been part of the program for more than 30 years already.

After having a successful gallery for more than 40 years Welters now stops the gallery: “I am grateful for all these years working with such a large group of fantastic artists, who gave me their trust. I am also happy to be able to help Nick start up his own gallery here in the Bloemstraat.”

In the last few years Welters already made sure part of his legacy was placed with institutions. Part of the gallery’s archives were donated to the RKD (Netherlands Institute for Art history). Welters’ collection has in large part been donated to the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, as well as to Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht; Centraal Museum Utrecht, Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterloo; Dordrechts Museum, Dordrecht and others. In 2025 a publication about the gallery’s history will be published by NAI010.

Nick Terra, the current gallery director who has been with the gallery for the last eight years, will set up his own gallery in the Bloemstraat location starting September 2025. More information about that new gallery will be announced in the new year!
